El Niño Threatens Kerala's Wildlife: Are We Prepared?
The Looming Crisis
According to the Forest Survey of India, Kerala has already witnessed 49 large forest fire incidents this year, raising alarm bells about the increasing frequency of such disasters. With El Niño expected to exacerbate conditions, the state’s forests and wildlife are under severe threat.
The crucial factor will be the amount and distribution of northeast monsoon rainfall, which directly impacts water availability in these vital ecosystems. As we head into a critical period for our forests, citizens must ask: What steps are the government and environmental authorities taking to mitigate this crisis?
As reported by The Hindu, the situation underscores an urgent need for accountability and action to safeguard Kerala’s rich biodiversity before it’s too late.
