Toxic Legacy of Waste Colonialism

In a shocking revelation, the UK exported a staggering 139,000 tonnes of plastic waste to Turkey last year, significantly impacting smallholder farmers in Adana. As reported by The Guardian, local farmer Ayhan laments, "We get pollution from all sides here," highlighting the dire consequences of what many are calling 'waste colonialism'.

The Environmental Investigation Agency's analysis reveals that between May 2021 and July 2024, 13 British companies sent 545 shipments of plastic waste to the Kemal Deniz recycling zone, just a mile away from Ayhan's aubergine fields. This influx of rubbish leaves farmers in the region grappling with toxic fumes and microplastics, severely undermining their livelihoods and health.

As the burden of foreign waste continues to mount, questions arise about the accountability of both the UK government and the exporting companies. What measures are being taken to address this ecological crisis? Will the voices of these marginalized farmers ever be heard? The time for answers is now.
